In-house Counsel

James joined the firm in 2008 to develop the new in-house advocacy department. Since its inception the department has grown to cover the greater majority of the firm’s work in the Crown Court and now enjoys an excellent reputation for the efficient and rigorous representation of our clients. He continues to run the department with overall responsibility for its daily management. James appears at all levels of the court system in cases involving allegations of the most serious offences including murder, manslaughter, kidnap, the importation and supply of drugs and the full range of lesser offences. He is an accredited advocacy trainer for SAHCA and was recently invited to run the Law Society’s nationwide advocacy training programme. His wider legal interests include the law relating to free speech. He regularly accepts pro bono instructions in this area from various organisations. In the past year he has drafted applications to the European Court of Human Rights on criminal defamation and the African Commission following the conviction of two Rwandan journalists for threatening national security
